The Animas Valley BBQ Showdown is a full on all out cooking competition open to all ages. It is designed to introduce the people of San Juan County to the world of competitive BBQ. There are four classes of BBQ competition, bands playing all day both days, a classic car show, vendors, and tons of fun for the kids.

The first category is the Professional class which is where Professional pitmasters from around the country will come to Farmington and compete in a fully sanctioned  and professionally judged cookoff for cash and prizes. There are four categories in the Pro class. Pork, brisket, ribs, and chicken. Judging for ribs and brisket will be on Saturday and judging for chicken and pork will be held on Sunday.

The second category is the Backyard Amateur class. This class is where every day Joes like you and me that think they cook great BBQ will compete and show their stuff. This class is open to the general public for cooking and judging. Sign up to be a cook and bring your grill! There is limited space, so sign up early to compete in this class. The top three pitmasters will be awarded cash and prizes.

The third category is the Green Chile class. If you have a great recipe that gramma passed down or its your own creation, come out and show it off! Just like the Amateur class, this is open to the general public for cooking and judging. There is limited space, so sign up early to compete in this class. The top three cooks will be awarded cash and prizes.

Finally, but certainly not least is the Peoples Choice category. This class gives the general public the opportunity to sample World Class Championship BBQ! Pro pitmasters will be serving their geatest creations to all. This class is also judged by the public.
